It's hard to say. First, we have to decide how many different entities we're dealing with here.
It's possible the prism is behind everything, in which case it's a more malicious being than the residents believe it to be. It's also possible that it's behind everything, but it truly cannot comprehend the morality behind its actions, in which case we have to... alter it somehow? Teach it to be better?
It may also be that the prism exists, but so does something else that the residents don't know of.
We've been making some progress, haven't we? People have found strange notes and the like. Whether they're real or not, we can start to paint a picture with them.
